Liberal Democrats call on County Council to become a Fairtrade council

by Simon Hicks on 25 March, 2010

At next Friday’s County Council meeting, Liberal Democrat Group Leader Morwen Millson will call on the Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources to consider taking action to make West Sussex a Fairtrade council

There are over 450 Fairtrade Towns across the UK , including many in West Sussex . The Fairtrade Foundation works with businesses, community groups and individuals to improve the trading position of producer organisations in the developing nations and to deliver sustainable livelihoods for farmers, workers and their communities. There are now 21 Fairtrade County Councils in the UK , as well as many district and town councils.

Morwen says, “Every Local Authority in the country has a commitment to promote sustainable development in their area. Fairtrade is one simple way to take action towards more sustainable development patterns in developing countries.

“In addition, becoming a Fairtrade council creates opportunities to engage with communities and individuals who support Fairtrade, and gives choice to people who are committed to using Fairtrade products. One London Council even found that it could save money by switching to Fairtrade tea and coffee in its vending machines.
