County Council elections June 4th

by Simon Hicks on 27 May, 2009

Sue Knight is standing for election to Burgess Hill East Division on June 4th.

A member of the Burgess Hill community since the early 1970s, Susan’s children attended Birchwood Groove School and Oakmeeds College where she is currently a Governor.  Sue has spent over 20 years serving our community and has been your County Councillor since 2005, and is Town councillor in Meeds Ward.

She lives with her husband, Graham, a District Councillor, who represents St Andrews ward. Between them they bring over 40 years of practical experience of making local government work for our community.

Susan was a mature student 17 years ago when she received her degree in Urban Studies at the University of Sussex. This was rewarded by her appointment as the Chief Executive for Crawley Council for Voluntary Services where she worked closely with organisations across the county arguing effectively for increased services for vulnerable children and adults as well as the elderly.

She continues to do this as member of Adult and Children Select Committees. Working on Taskforces to improve services for the elderly with Dementia, Looked After Children, Children in Transition to Adults Services and people with mental health problems.

Sue is a past Chair of Burgess Hill Age Concern and Founder Trustee and secretary of the Millhaven Trust, a drop in centre for people with mental heath problems. Millhaven’s members last year voted to become part of the Sussex Oakleaf Housing Association to give it improved long term resources and security.  Currently a Trustee of North and Mid Sussex Careers

Support Service.

Susan took early retirement in 2005 to look after Graham when he became seriously ill, his treatment was successful and Susan has spent the time since putting her wealth of experience and talents to good use over the last 4 years

achieving much for our community.

Susan says: “We need to protect and enhance our open play areas and leisure spaces, such as Janes Lane recreation ground, Bedelands and Batchelors Farms and the rest of the Burgess Hill Green Circle. We must ensure we get the infrastructure we need with any new housing and enhance what we already have.” .

Some issues that Sue has been involved in:

Ensure Birchwood Grove new school met the requirements of pupils, staff and

governors.

New Children’s Centre at Sidney West and controlled crossings on Leylands Road

and Queen Elizabeth Avenue.

Fought for and won improved ‘drop kerb’ access to our town centre for disabled

people and mums with pushchair’s and prams

Working for a Country Park at the Keymer Tile works site.

Working to get Newick House School rebuilt to modern and sustainable standards and Oakmeeds College onto the ‘Future Works programme’

Sue Knight says “The Tories have wasted on ill conceived projects like fighting AGAINST the South Downs National Park, and failed to maintain our roads until they were falling apart. They only committed to repairs after I presented them with a fully surveyed list of work needed to be done.”
